Hiring rockstar millennials through effective digital story telling

“If I’m being completely honest with you, I plan on never hiring a millennial again! They have no loyalty and they want too much.” - Executive of a Fortune 1000 Company, 2016.
I was shocked but shrugged it off after he and I had a very intense disagreement on this topic. Surely, he was the exception.
Within two months a Chief Marketing Officer of a mid-sized company said
“Thank goodness my new hire isn’t a millennial. I just haven’t had any luck getting millennials that want to stick around and work hard enough to move up.”
That’s when I knew this situation needed more attention.
As most of my clients have always been executives in sales and marketing, I started to ask their opinions on hiring and managing millennials. What I found were executives frustrated and at a breaking point with their younger employees. There were very few who felt that millennials were valuable contributors.
I’ve managed more than my fair share of millennials. The company I owned and ran for 10 years was staffed almost entirely by millennials except for a few members of the executive team. I believe the success of that company was due to the hard work and the incredible spirit of the millennials that worked there.
Even though the company was acquired and transformed last year, many past employees remain close friends and have bonds with their former colleagues and managers that border on familial.
Yes, some millennials are lazy and entitled, but so are some baby boomers and Gen Xers. In my experience, those people appear in about the same ratio regardless of generation.
So here are six tips to attract millennials that will move your company forward using effective digital storytelling:
1) Millennials are more comfortable in the digital world than previous generations. They’ve grown up online so meet them where they are by telling your company story on social media platforms.
2) Company culture and values are important to millennials. They want to make money, but they also want a career that has meaning. Share your company’s culture and values through the career page on your website.

3) Millennials often choose video content over written. Tap passionate employees to create short, amateur videos about why they work at your company or what their favorite thing about the company is.
4) Highlight social good causes by asking the employees to share their involvement in sponsored charity events. Group all of the content under a hashtag. Most people want to be a part of a team that does something good for the world and they are proud to share it.
5) Show the value of the company’s products beyond the revenue generated. How did the product help a company, person or community?
6) Authenticity is key. Any of the above tips have to be treated with truth because millennials can sniff out spin. Remember that they’ve grown up in a time with thousands of news sources that all have conflicting agendas.
The question isn’t whether you should be hiring millennials. The question is are you telling your story well enough to hire the rockstar millennials who could take your company further.
