A solution that mirrors how employees want to work
With precision befitting a scientific organization, Thermo Fisher took careful steps to ensure a seamless transition for all employees. It migrated vital content before launch, so employees could find what they needed from the beginning. And when employees use iConnect for the first time, they’re greeted by a welcome video and a feature called WalkMe, which offers a guided training.
Thermo Fisher also included several capabilities to make its intranet easy to use, including:
• Personalization: Employees can configure their settings to display resources they regularly access in the form of personalized icons similar to those used on a mobile phone.
• Mobile access: iConnect features a responsive website design for optimal viewing on mobile devices and works with the Yammer mobile app.
• Real-time translation: Thermo Fisher incorporated Microsoft Translator, which can translate content on every SharePoint page into one of 50 different languages. “We’ve gotten rave reviews about the translation capabilities,” says Duke. “Employees see SharePoint pages easily translated in real time and realize they no longer have to create multiple versions of content.”
To foster two-way engagement and a social media feel, Thermo Fisher took an approach where every SharePoint site has a corresponding Yammer news feed. This allows employees to have conversations on topics and content inline on SharePoint team sites or in the Yammer communities they’re involved with—and easily move between them. Their personalized Yammer news feed is prominently displayed on the iConnect home page, so they can stay up-to-date in one place.
The thoughtful design and deployment paid off with a high adoption rate and wide reach across Thermo Fisher. Approximately 22,000 employees access SharePoint daily, and iConnect currently includes 150 organizational sites, 96 geographic sites, and more than 3,000 collaboration sites (SharePoint Team sites with integrated Yammer groups). “Employees who have activated Yammer accounts are already showing more than 80 percent engagement within the first six months of launch. Something’s clearly working, and we firmly believe it’s because the Yammer feeds are front and center on our intranet, where employees can easily find them,” says Duke.
